SASSA distinguishes between temporary and permanent disabilities. The type of grant you receive depends on how long your condition is expected to last, as assessed by a state medical officer.

Eligibility & Requirements
Who Can Apply
- Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee.
- Age between 18 and 59 years.
- A state-appointed medical officer must certify that your disability prevents you from working for at least 6 consecutive months.
- Must pass the means test (income and asset thresholds).
- Cannot already be receiving another social grant for yourself (e.g., Old Age Grant).
- Must not be in a state-funded institution (hospital, care home). Living at home while attending treatment is acceptable.
- Must reside in South Africa.

How to Apply
Visit Your Nearest SASSA Office
Applications must be submitted in person. Bring all required documents in original form. If you are too ill or physically unable to visit, a family member or friend with a signed power of attorney can submit on your behalf.
Complete the Application Form
A SASSA officer will guide you through the official form and ask questions about your condition, income, and living situation. Your documents will be verified, and biometric data (fingerprints) will be collected. The form must be completed by you or a SASSA officer; third parties are not allowed.
Undergo the Medical Assessment
SASSA will refer you to a state medical officer for assessment. This may be done the same day or scheduled for a later date. Bring all medical evidence such as hospital letters, specialist reports, and prescriptions.
Get Your Receipt
After submission, you will receive a stamped receipt with a reference number, date, and the officerโs name. Keep this receipt safe as it is your only proof of application.
Wait for SASSA’s Decision
Processing can take up to 90 days. During this time, SASSA will verify documents, check income with SARS and banks, and review the medical report. Approved grants are backdated to the application date. If declined, SASSA provides a written reason, and you have 90 days to appeal.
Transition to Older Personโs Grant
At age 60, the Disability Grant stops, but you automatically become eligible for the Older Person’s Grant (R2,400 from April 2026). Visit your SASSA office before your 60th birthday to ensure a smooth transition.
2026 Compliance Updates
SASSA has increased verification this year. By December 2026, 6 million bank accounts and 8 million credit records were reviewed, flagging over 291,000 grants. More than 34,000 grants were cancelled, and 8,600 grants were adjusted. If you receive a review request, bring your ID, income proof, bank statements (last 3 months), proof of residence, and medical reports.
